Sigmund Freud's Concept of the Id, Ego, and Superego: A Psychological Trinity Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, revolutionized the understanding of the human psyche by introducing the tripartite model of the mind: the id, ego, and superego. Born in 1856 in what is now the Czech Republic, Freud's work laid the foundation for modern psychology, and his exploration of the unconscious mind shaped how we perceive the complexities of human behavior. Freud's model, developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, proposes that the human mind is not a singular entity but a dynamic interplay of three distinct forces, each with its unique functions and drives. The Id: The Primal Instincts and Desires At the core of Freud's model is the id, representing the most primitive and instinctual aspects of human nature. The id operates on the pleasure principle, seeking immediate gratification of basic needs and desires. It is the impulsive, unconscious reservoir of energy that demands satisfaction without consideration for social norms or consequences. Think of babies and toddlers, whose reactions are guided solely based on carnal needs and ways of iterating those needs: hunger results in crying, want for an item results in grabbing or stealing; and dissatisfaction may result in outright tantrums of protest. The id can be likened to the body (flesh) in the trinity of man. It embodies our innate, bodily desires and impulses, seeking pleasure and avoiding pain. This raw and unfiltered aspect of the psyche is present from birth, driving fundamental needs such as hunger, thirst, and sexual gratification. Furthermore, the flesh has no restraint through the establishment of logic, rules, nor morality: “I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it,” as Ariana Grande writes in her hit song, "7 Rings". The Id (or flesh) is always seeking but never satisfied: it’s a purely instinctual force to be reckoned and requires discipline to restrain. The Ego: The Rational and Conscious Self (Soul) Contrasting the Id, the ego establishes itself as the referee to mediate between the unconscious desires of the id and the external world. The ego operates on the reality principle, seeking ways to satisfy the id's impulses in a socially acceptable and realistic manner. It represents the conscious, rational aspect of the mind, making decisions based on reason and weighing the consequences of actions. For example, say someone is tempted to steal a chocolate bar at the local grocery store. The Id is the primal force that seeks the gratification to take that succulent bar: it is the flesh that desires something sweet to eat without payment, regardless of the consequences that stealing may present. It’s the Ego’s job to intercede: one’s own awareness of self and knowledge of right of wrong, in other words, the part of the human mind which makes the final decision in choosing not to steal the chocolate bar. The ego aligns with the concept of the soul in the trinity, encompassing the mind and emotions. It is the seat of conscious awareness, responsible for logical thinking, problem-solving, and managing emotional responses. The ego allows individuals to navigate the complexities of the external world while balancing the demands of the id and societal expectations. The Ego is ‘Your final decision-maker’ and ultimately, the you, which you identify with and are usually aware of! The Superego: The Internalized Morality (Soul/Spirit) Completing Freud's trinity is the superego, which develops because of socialization and internalization of societal norms and values. The superego acts as a moral guide, representing the ideals and moral standards instilled by parents, culture, and society. It strives for perfection and operates on the moral principle, often leading to feelings of guilt or shame when its standards are not met. I’d say this construct by Freud can masquerade easily as a born-again ‘Spirit’, because it appears often better than what it is. There’s no reference in Freud’s model about the Superego being possibly corrupted (which, if it’s Freud’s answer to the Spirit aspect of Man’s trinity, then it’s lacking the idea of original sin). People can have moral codes and regulate their sinful desires, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they're ‘Walking in the Spirit’ or born-again. Bear in mind, the world has established its own sets of rules, which Freud claims the Superego is established upon. Homosexuality, fornication, oral sex, and the usage of drugs have all become mostly acceptable to most Americans’ superegos. However, the Lord uses one’s born-again experience to properly cleanse His chosen: He provides His own ‘SUPEREGO’ in the form of the Holy Spirit to reclaim His Elect and change their moral standards to His own. If fornication and homosexuality are deemed acceptable by the world and then contaminate one’s superego as a result—These instinctual sins are purged by the Holy Spirit upon rebirth and restrained by one’s Ego. The Id (the flesh) may attempt to bring this darkness back to the surface as it is one of habit and gratification, but by walking in the Spirit (or as Freud has dubbed ‘Superego’) the darkness can be resisted, if not neutralized over time. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2) In the trinity of man, the superego can be equated with the spiritual dimension. It embodies the moral and ethical aspects that go beyond immediate desires or rational considerations, reflecting a higher level of awareness towards society and one’s effect on others. The superego encourages individuals to strive for moral excellence and adhere to societal norms, connecting them to a broader sense of purpose and ethical responsibility. However, it does not account for original sin, the inherent evils of men, or the world’s depravity. Implications and Critiques: Freud's trinity model has had a profound impact on psychology. It provides a framework for understanding the complexities of human behavior. However, it has not been without criticism. It does not consider the flaws of the superego. Not everyone has a ‘justifiable’ moral code to keep themselves in check—Otherwise, there would be no human depravity. In other words, Freud’s model fails to acknowledge one’s ‘evil within’. What happens when the Superego chooses to delight itself in the evil of the Id? What happens if the Superego itself is corrupted? M. Scott Peck: "People of the Lie" M. Scott Peck, a psychiatrist and author, embarked on a unique exploration of the human psyche that extended beyond conventional psychological boundaries. Known for his work in psychotherapy and spiritual psychology, Peck made a significant impact with his book "People of the Lie," where he delves into the concept of evil and the human capacity for self-deception. This venture led him to collaborate with Catholic exorcists, providing a distinctive perspective on the three-part nature of man: body, soul (mind, will, and emotions), and spirit. Background Born on May 22nd, 1936, in New York City, Peck initially trained as a psychiatrist. His career took a transformative turn as he delved into the intersection of psychology and spirituality. "The Road Less Traveled", his ground-breaking book published in 1978, gained widespread acclaim for its insights into personal growth and human behavior. However, it was "People of the Lie," published in 1983, that marked a departure from conventional psychiatric discourse. Peck's Exploration of the Three-Part Nature of Man Body While Peck's work does not explicitly delve into the physical aspect of man, his emphasis on the human experience acknowledges the importance of the body in the overall framework. The body serves as the vessel through which individuals navigate the challenges presented by the mind, emotions, and spirit. Soul (Mind, Will, and Emotions) Peck's exploration of the soul aligns with previously established concepts on the mind and emotions. However, in "People of the Lie", he investigates the nature of evil, not merely as external forces but as a manifestation of internal deception and self-delusion. The soul, in Peck's view, grapples with the complexities of human behavior, including the capacity for deceit and malevolence: narcissism, cruelty, and greed in the foreground. Spirit The spiritual dimension takes center stage in Peck's collaboration with Catholic excorcists and his discussions about "People of the Lie". While not explicitly aligning with a particular religious doctrine, Peck acknowledges the existence of evil and posits that confronting this evil requires a connection to a higher spiritual truth. In this sense, the spirit becomes the battleground for the struggle between truth and deception--a need for a savior, JESUS CHRIST OF NAZARETH! "People of the Lie" and Speculations about Evil Peck's engagement with Catholic exorcists and his reflections on "People of the Lie" provide a unique lens through which to understand the spiritual dimension of human existence. The concept of "People of the Lie" refers to individuals who engage in persistent self-deception, constructing a false reality to avoid facing uncomfortable truths about themselves. Peck speculates that evil is not merely an external force but a deeply ingrained aspect of human nature. He suggests that acknowledging the existence of evil is crucial for personal and spiritual growth. Truths Unveiled by Peck The Reality of Evil Within Peck's recognition of evil within individuals challenges the notion that evil is solely an external force. By exploring the concept of "People of the Lie," he sheds light on the human capacity for self-deception and the internal struggles that lead to dark, malevolent behavior. In other words, he highlights individuals who act on negative, twisted emotions; usually, they blame others for their failures! Peck is keen on understanding and acknowledging the existence of narcissists. Spiritual Dimensions of Healing Peck's collaboration with Catholic exorcists suggests there is value in acknowledging the spiritual dimensions of healing and personal growth. While not exclusively tied to a religious framework, Peck's work encourages individuals to confront deeper truths about themselves and engage in a transformative journey. Someone cannot fix a problem without looking at the root cause, usually starting with themselves. Integration of Psychology and Spirituality Through examining the realm of spirituality and collaborating with exorcists, Peck demonstrates the potential for an integrated method towards understanding human nature: Psychological insights and spiritual exploration offering an improved way of treating individuals holistically in terms of all three aspects of one’s ‘trinity.’ At EIC, we have already bridged this gap in the form of ‘Deliverance Counseling’. We offer our services to individuals who desire to examine their inner evil through the eyes of the Lord and acknowledge their need for His help to cleanse themselves of their inner darkness. “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). He will provide the insight and the ways of doing so. Yet, it is up to the client to receive these truths about themselves for progress to be made, and hopefully—a born-again experience to be made!

The soul is “the middle man” between the spirit and the body. It is connected to both. While with body we feel hunger, thirst, physical pain and lusts; the soul is where we feel emotions since the soul also incudes the heart. With the heart includes the mind (that being intellect, reason), will (that being our freewill) and emotions. So, the heart is a major part of the soul. And this is not the physical heart, the vital organ, it’s the invisible heart within us all that we can’t see physically. The soul is the make-up of our personality, in terms of our behavior, how we act, respond, and feel; and is the place of opinions, interests, and personal desires and ambitions. The soul is synonymous for “self” and is the seat of “self consciousness.” The soul is where we find our mind aware of the person “within the this body.” Just as no one has the same body-- even twins can't generate the same fingerprint-- so too with the soul. Every soul on planet earth is individually and uniquely different. Since the soul is connected to the spirit, it is an eternal part of us, and is held accountable for its actions—this is why we must see to it that our souls undergo the needed changes according to the will of God. "Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:12-13) There are a few things we need to assess with this scripture. First of all, I see the word “obey” used here, and I believe this is where all working out of your salvation with fear and trembling begins: OBEY. Obeying the Lord, obeying His commandments and where He is trying to lead you is where we must begin. We must set aside religion, family, friends--anything and everything that our soul is attached to that is blocking our obedience. Obedience is not just some military “do this or do that.” This spiritual journey in Christ is a call, a destiny, and obedience is how we remain aligned with what God wills for us each day. This is not some extraordinary fabulous moment in the future, but it is present, each day, day by day AS WE RECOGNIZE we have a Lord, and the name of our Lord is JESUS CHRIST OF NAZARETH. This is why He is called the LORD—because He is the One we ultimately obey when it comes down to any choice, we must choose what is right, what is according to our faith and doctrine. Once we start obeying the Lord, we can discover the true meaning of fear and trembling. Part of the fear and trembling is knowing that while the Lord is full of mercy and slow to anger, He holds zero tolerance for sin and foolishness. God is completely and utterly holy, so much so that when the children of Israel were at Mount Sinai, if they even just touched the mountain they were struck dead instantly. And let us remember the tragedy of sin: it required the perfect Son of God, Jesus, to die and shed His holy blood, blood holy enough to atone for all sin once and for all. The fear and trembling is a deep, intense respect and admiration, the loyal heart of a noble servant who will do anything at the cost of his king, and take any order given to him without questions. And it is this reverence for the blood of Jesus, the work He achieved, the debt He wiped out, and the awe of His powers and authority that should cause us to tremble. Yet, looking at the scripture we see the words “work out”. Indeed, to get to a place of fear and trembling IS WORK. Because more often than not, when we are fulfilling the work of the Lord, our soul’s salvation is worked out as we work for the Lord: You see, every Christian who was and is truly a part of the body of Christ is spiritually assigned to a task. No one is exempt. We all are to work for the Lord. Jesus explained in a parable of the Minas in Matthew 25 that every Christian is given talents, entrusted with “denarius” that they are to use and multiply. In other words, Jesus GAVE US GIFTS, like a loan, that we did not deserve, so to “pay off the interest” WE USE THEM FOR HIS PURPOSES!!! But this is the problem: we are in a society with a Christianity that doesn’t know the difference between soul and spirit. This type of Christians think all the gifts are for themselves and they do not know the path of salvation is a path of difficulty, narrow, hard to find, and only a few do. They don’t understand fear and trembling because deep down they are sinners with false conversions. They are unaware of God and His knowledge, unaware of what is expected of them, and unable to fulfill. And this is why the enemy has set up Wall number 5: RELIGION! Because this wall damages the souls of everyone who becomes involved with it, just as every wall is designed to do. What religion does is pollute the soul with false doctrines and practices that keep the mind and heart of the person deceived. They become completely blind to the return of the Lord and to their own suffering. Therefore, they are blind to fearing the Lord and living a clean life. “The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.” (Psalm 19:9-10) I believe the ultimate reason there is so much foolishness is because there is an overall lack of the fear of the LORD in the institutional church--even in legalistic, hyper-orthodox churches--no one truly fears the Lord. However, they fear men, they fear tradition, they fear worldly systems, and they fear money. I know that I lacked this fear of the Lord: I just ran around thinking every prophecy I heard was from God, every dream was from God, and every supernatural thing that came my way was from God. I went around declaring and decreeing, trying to save souls, preaching no gospel, and teaching false doctrine. I was not even saved myself. Religion inhibits us from the fear of the Lord because religion deceives us. When we are deceived, we can think we are fearing the Lord when--really--we are shaming His name. And when we are deceived and not fearing the Lord, then we are foolish. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” (Proverbs 9:10) So, you are not walking in wisdom when you are not fearing the Lord. You are doing foolish things, stupid things, vain things. A way to know whether you fear the Lord or not is to look back at your life (or even reflect on your day) and see if there is any wisdom. If there is some foolishness, stupidity, or even vanity, you may need to WORK OUT your OWN salvation. I believe Paul needed to emphasize “own” because he understood every soul is different and each Christian’s salvation journey is unique and individual. What is an issue for one is a strength for another and so on… “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” (Jesus, John 6:27) Our priority needs to be Jesus Christ of Nazareth and laboring for His food and His substance. That is what gives us true life!! We will see our soul being perfected, being worked out, and growing in fear and trembling as we work to obtain His substance.

Religious demons are able to enter and take up residence. When you have had a false conversion, your soul is damaged. Your issues with sin--alcohol, drugs, sex, lust, hatred, racism/prejudice continue to cause you to damage yourself and practically self-destruct. Your already wicked heart is in line with evil spirits when you have had a false conversion. (John 6:63) Jesus was telling the disciples, "that the Spirit gives life: the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you they are full of the Spirit and life." Religious demons' tricks keep the person in the dark, even about their own spiritual condition. Conscious and Unconcious Mind Unconcious mind includes forgotten archetypes, past experiences, images. It is often not activated unless an event stimulates or reminds them of that behavior, feeling, or past experience. People have damaged souls due to the unconcious and concious mind. It is difficult for an individual to come to terms with who they are when the unconcious mind is filled with painful memories, like sexual abuse, or emotional abuse. With a concious mind, the individual is aware of their problems but can still struggle to improve on those weaknesses. A person's unconcious experiences can produce imaginations and assumptions. A painful past that you forgot and put into your unconcious mind; can shape the way you handle your feelings to this day. Deliverance Counseling Casting Down Imaginations helps the captive to focus on particular behaviors, analyze them and then guide the captive to use their free will to choose the will of God as revealed in His Word. Scripture: 2nd Corinthians 10:5 Empower the Captive- (Use truth, love, their own testimonies.) Empower them to break out of self-defeating, self-limiting patterns. Utilize the support of a Christ-centered network. EIC is a support system and a source of empowerment. Replacing Old Seed- a deliverance session can set a captive free from demons but if the captive still keeps the same mindsets, another authority figure, whether a co-worker, supervisor, friend, or strong church member can put the captive back into bondage. Demons know how to travel. They will find someone in the captive's environment to continue to send "seed that binds." Captives who "brood over the past" must overcome by having victory over the past in spite of all their failures that the enemy helped them list and record in their mind. Proclamations- the captive says a proclamation if they have weakness in their soul they are trying to deal with. For example, individuals who tend to be people-pleaser or hide their true self, can say a proclamation out loud against that behavior so that their soul can hear themselves say it. Renounce Legal contract with religious demons. The Spirit is Affected by the Damaged Soul If the born-again individual gives into their carnal flesh in the soul, they have forsaken the Holy Spirit that is in them and have chosen to indulge in their soul's problems. Jesus Christ of Nazareth defeated all things when He died and physically came back alive again. With all the things He defeated, that includes fear. If before being born-again you were afraid of showing your true self, Salvation in Jesus Christ defeats all that fear. The Holy Spirit guides you to choose truth. A born-again believer walks in the Spirit by rejecting their soul's self-indulgences and weaknesses. Problems of the soul can cause spiritual ignorance. This can serve as a dark cloud that blocks the light of the Holy Ghost from penetrating our spirits. A born-again believer walks in the Spirit when they are ready for darkness to be exposed and reject all forms of deception. If any sin comes back to a born-again believer, they must repent of it. When they do this, they walk in the Spirit.

The soul is a spiritual, unseen organ with both the conscious and unconscious chambers filled with evil memories that are experienced from generation to generation. As the center of human personality, the soul includes both the conscious and unconscious mind and the emotions, even the personality. Consequently, the criminal act of capturing and carrying away human beings by force is both mentally damaging and emotionally debilitating. For if a man's wife is abducted and stolen from him, slavery is a crime against the family relationship and particularly against the wife, from generation to generation, with the untold devastating affects to the human soul. Slavery of the past continues to rule the souls of men in these times, in spite of their race. For it is a shock to the psyche, leaving the heart in a cold, self-protective mode.
